General Presentation and Department History

 The Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences provides Bachelor’s, Master's and PhD degrees in a contemporary academic setting with the mission of educating individuals who have critical, analytical thinking, interpretation and research skills, who are open to different perspectives and opinions, who have both academic integrity and ethical relationship values, who are conscious of protecting human rights, who are willing to contribute positively to both national and universal culture, who are aware of the social problems and who can act with ethical responsibility in the face of these problems.

 Founded in 1992 and started its undergraduate education with 30 students in 2006-2007 academic year, the Department of Philosophy continues its education and teaching with 200 undergraduate students in 2024 and offers a bachelor’s degree in philosophy to its students who can successfully complete their studies in accordance with this mission. The department, which was previously within Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has currently been affiliated to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was established on 26.07.2022.

Besides a Bachelor’s degree, the Department of Philosophy offers 2-year Master's degree and 4-year PhD programmes in Turkish. Founded in 2010, the Master's programme of philosophy started its education and academic activities with 7 Master's students in the academic year 2010-2011 and still continues to offer graduate level studies. The department which had a joint co-degree doctoral programme with the Department of Philosophy of Pamukkale University since 2011, started its own doctoral programme in 2022.

There are a total of four academic units within the department namely, Systematic Philosophy and Logic, History of Philosophy, History of Turkish Islamic Thought and History of Science, and the faculty members are qualified and competent in terms of both quantity and quality in their areas of expertise. The programme of the department which has 8 faculty members and 3 lecturers, includes courses for reading the basic texts of philosophers in the history of philosophy and determining their basic concepts, comprehending the main basic problems of the field, as well as courses aimed at developing the abilities of students that will distinguish them form their

 Students who successfully complete the undergraduate studies in philosophy and take courses that support their personal development in various fields, can work in education and culture departments of various public institutions and private organizations. Philosophy graduates who took pedagogical formation certificate and completed their courses from sociology and psychology qualifies for working as a philosophy teacher as well as school counselors in private institutions, and  as pedagogues in foreign countries with this formation.
