Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does the message “Advisor approval has not been granted” mean?

This message does not indicate a problem with your registration. The advisor approval process continues throughout the registration period and does not prevent you from enrolling in courses. Approval is granted after course selection.

2. Can I take a different elective or DE (Departmental Elective) course instead of a previously failed one?

Yes. You may replace an elective or DE course you failed due to absence or unsuccessful performance with another course of the same type, even from a different semester or year. However, replacing a compulsory course with an elective or vice versa is not allowed.

3. Can I take an extra elective course instead of a compulsory one?

No. Students who do not fulfil the requirements for compulsory courses will not be approved for graduation. Both the total ECTS and the distribution of compulsory, elective, and DE credits must be met.

4. Can I take courses from upper semesters?

In principle, yes. However, first-year students are discouraged from doing so. Other students may take up to 45 ECTS per semester. For those who have already completed 140 ECTS, this limit is 50 ECTS.

5. Can I take failed courses in later semesters?

Yes. However, priority should be given to failed courses before registering for current term courses.

6. Why can’t I see the section for my failed course?

OBIS displays the failed courses first, but this does not guarantee the course is offered that term. You need to check if the course is available and follow the course schedule regularly.

7. My compulsory courses clash. Can the schedule be changed?

No. Course schedules are prepared centrally at the faculty level and cannot be changed by the department. Overlaps usually happen when taking courses from different semesters.

8. Will any other electives be opened?

No. The courses listed on OBIS during registration represent the final version of the course schedule. No additional electives will be added.

9. I can't register for a course. Why?

This may be due to insufficient ECTS, unmet prerequisites, schedule conflicts, or incorrect section selection. Check the error message that appears in the lower-left corner when clicking “register”.

10. My registration for a course was cancelled. Why?

You may have mistakenly registered for a section opened for another department. Read the section warnings carefully during registration.

11. The quota for an elective course is full. Will it be increased?

Usually not. Additional quota is not opened unless all alternatives are full. Some courses have limited quotas. Early registration is recommended.

12. Is attendance mandatory for Course X?

Yes. Courses taken for the first time or failed due to absence (F2) require 70% attendance. Distance learning courses also require attendance, and weekly video content must be watched within one week of release. This is monitored by the Distance Education Unit with no flexibility.

13. Will Course X be offered in the summer term?

No summer school will be offered at our university for the 2024–2025 academic year. However, it is possible to enrol in summer school courses at other universities.

14. I can’t register for a prerequisite course because my exam result isn’t available. What should I do?

If the resit exam coincides with the registration period, it may block enrolment. Such courses can be added during the add/drop period or by petition during the late registration week.

15. Can I retake a passed course to improve my grade?

Courses with a D1 grade can be re-registered via OBIS. For courses with a C3 or higher, departmental and faculty approval via petition is required. The new grade replaces the old one on the transcript.

16. Can I register without paying the tuition fee?

No. You must pay your tuition before course registration can be finalised.

17. What happens if I don’t pay for a distance/paid course?

Such courses remain in “pre-registration” status until payment is made. If payment is not completed within the given period, the registration will be cancelled.

18. Do I have to register for at least one course during the main registration period to register during add-drop week?

Yes. Students who do not register for any courses during the main period cannot register during add-drop week but must wait for the late registration period.
