The department was established in 1992 and began to accept students from the academic year 1993-1994. The first graduates were awarded degrees in 1998. Entomology Department and Plant Pathology Department are the branches of the Department of Plant Protection. The academic staff includes six faculty members in the Department of Entomology and one research assistant, nine faculty members in the Department of Plant Pathology. Hence a total of 14 faculty members and 1 research assistants. (Click for the Academic Staff).
The work area of the Department of Plant Protection includes the study of harmful pests and protecting the crop plants from pests and diseases. Department of Entomology conducts research regarding insects, mites and nematodes harmful for plants while Department of Plant Pathology conducts research regarding the fungi, viruses and bacteria causing diseases in plants as well as the study of weeds, their biology, diagnosis of losses due to weeds and the development of practical weed control methods.

Our mission is to address the plant protection problems and possible remedies. Groom the agricultural engineers to equip them with contemporary knowledge and information, sensitive to the environment and human health and having awareness of professional ethics and responsibility. The R&D activities for the plant protection such as use of local, regional, national and global plant protection agents and crop production processes to provide a positive contribution to literature are within our scope.
Our vision is to offer training and high-quality education in the area of modern agriculture, produce environmentally friendly plant protection practices, develop cooperation with national and international scientific community, generate knowledge and technologies from the projects to provide solutions to problems regarding plant protection and train the human resource (agriculture engineers) to lead their role in private and public institutions.
Undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members of the Department of Plant Protection are taking advantage of the FARABÄ° or ERASMUS programs to go to the abroad universities for a specific period to complete a portion of the educational or scientific work as well as share their knowledge regarding culture
The goals of the Department for Plant Protection are to diagnose the plant pests and control them using plant protection agents, develop new technologies and methods for plant protection, use local, regional, national and global crop production technologies for R&D activities and provide a positive contribution to the literature.
In this context, many projects supported by the TUBITAK, BAP, SPO, Ministry of Agriculture and international private organizations have been completed successfully. The department also provides recommendation services to the growers in the region for the diagnosis and control of pests, diseases and weeds.
The research areas for the discipline of Phytopathology include general phytopathology, mycology, bacteriology, virology and herbology. The infrastructure includes laboratories, green houses, screen houses and controlled climate green houses.
The discipline of Entomology includes research work in the areas of general entomology, acarology, nematology and toxicology and has laboratories and controlled climate rooms.
In the Entomology subdivision, there are microscopes to make identification on insect, mites and nematodes, image analysing system and plant extraction equipment. In the subdivision of phytopathology, there are microskopes to be used in fungus identification, patojen culture equipments such as laminar flows, autoclaves, owens, and incubators, molecular diagnosis equipments such as real time PCR , PCR and gel imaging systems.
